Pregnancy is an exciting time in your life; your body is changing to meet the needs of your growing baby and massage is an excellent way of helping your body adapt to these changes.
Massage therapy can often relieve many of the common side effects of pregnancy but is not intended to replace the care provided by your Doctor or Midwife. However, I can work in collaboration with them to provide additional physical and emotional support.
Massage in early pregnancy
It is often advised that massge should only be carried out after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. In fact, light massage to certain parts of the body can be perfectly safe to receive in the first trimester; I have massaged many of my regular clients throughout their whole pregnancy. However, this will depend on your medical background, and how your pregnancy is progressing, and I make treatment decisions based on individual circumstances.
How will you benefit from Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy Massage can help with the many changes that your body and emotions undergo both during pregnancy and after the birth itself:
- promotes general relaxation, and reduces stress and anxiety
- improves circulation for both mother and baby
- alleviates back, neck and shoulder pain
- helps relieve sciaticic and sacro-iliac pain
- helps reduce water retention (oedema), especially swollen ankles and legs
- promotes pelvic floor healing and rebalances the pelvis and spine
- facilitates healing after a caesarian, and helps restore and normalize abdominal structures
